Frequently Asked Questions

Are these passwords safe to use?
Yes. They are generated in your browser using crypto.getRandomValues(), a cryptographically secure random source. Nothing is sent over the network, logged, or stored.
How long should a server password be?
For root or SSH passwords use at least 16 characters with mixed character sets, giving roughly 100 bits of entropy. Better still, disable password login and use SSH keys.
What does the entropy figure mean?
Entropy (in bits) measures how hard a password is to guess. Each extra bit doubles the work for an attacker. Under ~40 bits is weak; 80+ bits is very strong.
Why exclude ambiguous characters?
Characters like 0/O and 1/l/I are easy to misread when typing a password from a console or screenshot. Excluding them trades a little entropy for fewer typos.
